Guide to Net Metering Services
If you’re thinking about solar power for your home, farm, or business in Alberta, you’ve probably heard about solar energy metering. It’s a key part of how solar systems connect to the grid and how you get credited for the energy you produce. But what exactly is it? How does it work? And why is it such a hot topic right now?
Let’s break it down in simple terms. I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about solar energy metering, including the ins and outs of net metering, why some changes are happening, and what it means for you. Ready? Let’s dive in!
What Is Solar Energy Metering and How Does It Work?
Solar energy metering is the process of measuring the electricity your solar panels generate and how much you use from the grid. It’s like a two-way meter that tracks both the power you consume and the power you send back to the grid.
Here’s how it works in a nutshell:
-
Your solar panels produce electricity during the day.
-
You use some of that electricity to power your home or business.
-
If you generate more than you use, the extra power flows back to the grid.
-
Your meter records this excess energy and credits your account.
-
When your panels aren’t producing enough (like at night), you draw power from the grid as usual.
This system helps you save money by reducing your electricity bills. Instead of losing unused solar energy, you get credit for it, which offsets the cost of power you buy later.
Solar energy meter tracking electricity flow. Why Is This Important?
Without solar energy metering, you’d have no way to track how much energy you’re producing or using. It’s the backbone of any solar setup connected to the grid. Plus, it ensures fairness — you only pay for what you use, and you get rewarded for what you contribute.
Understanding the Role of Solar Energy Metering in Alberta
Alberta’s energy landscape is unique. With its mix of urban and rural areas, farms, and businesses, the province is ripe for solar adoption. But the rules around solar energy metering can vary, and it’s important to know what applies to you.
In Alberta, solar energy metering typically involves a bi-directional meter that tracks both consumption and production. Utilities use this data to calculate your net energy use.
Here’s what you should keep in mind:
-
Grid Connection: Your solar system must be connected to the grid with an approved meter.
-
Billing: You get billed for your net electricity use — that’s the difference between what you consume and what you produce.
-
Incentives: Some programs offer credits or rebates for solar energy production.
-
Regulations: Alberta’s policies on solar metering are evolving, so staying updated is key.
If you want to explore options, net metering services can help you get set up with the right equipment and plans tailored to your needs.

Why Is Net Metering Going Away?
You might have heard some buzz about net metering going away or changing. So, what’s the deal?
Net metering has been a popular way to encourage solar adoption by crediting customers for excess energy at retail rates. But as more people install solar, utilities and regulators are rethinking how this system works.
Here’s why net metering is evolving:
-
Grid Costs: Utilities argue that net metering customers don’t pay enough for grid maintenance since they rely less on grid power but still use the infrastructure.
-
Fairness: There’s a push to make sure all customers pay their fair share for grid upkeep.
-
New Models: Some regions are moving toward “net billing” or other compensation methods that pay solar producers at rates closer to the wholesale price of electricity.
-
Sustainability: The goal is to balance encouraging solar growth with maintaining a reliable and affordable grid for everyone.
For Alberta homes, farms, and businesses, this means the way you get credited for your solar energy might change. It’s a good idea to stay informed and work with providers who understand these shifts.

How to Make the Most of Solar Energy Metering Today
Even with changes on the horizon, solar energy metering remains a powerful tool to save money and reduce your carbon footprint. Here’s how you can maximize its benefits:
-
Choose the Right System Size: Don’t oversize your solar array. Match it to your typical energy use to avoid producing too much excess energy that might not be credited fully.
-
Monitor Your Usage: Use smart meters or apps to track your energy production and consumption in real time.
-
Time Your Energy Use: Run high-energy appliances during the day when your panels are producing power.
-
Work with Trusted Providers: Companies like Big Rock Power offer net metering services and can guide you through installation, metering, and billing.
-
Stay Updated on Policies: Keep an eye on Alberta’s energy regulations to adapt your system or plans as needed.
By being proactive, you can keep your energy costs low and your system efficient.
What’s Next for Solar Energy Metering in Alberta?
The future of solar energy metering in Alberta is bright but changing. As technology advances and policies evolve, you’ll see new ways to interact with the grid and get value from your solar investment.
Some trends to watch:
-
Smart Meters and IoT: More homes and businesses will use smart meters that provide detailed data and control.
-
Energy Storage: Batteries will let you store excess solar energy for use when the sun isn’t shining.
-
Dynamic Pricing: Time-of-use rates may reward you for using energy during off-peak hours.
-
Community Solar: Shared solar projects could offer options for those who can’t install panels on their own property.
Getting involved early and choosing flexible solutions will help you stay ahead.

What is Micro-Generation?

Micro-generation is just a fancy way of saying producing your own electricity using renewable energy—like solar panels or wind turbines—right where you live or work. Homeowners, small businesses, and even community buildings can generate their own power to help cover their electricity needs.
Here’s the best part: if you generate more electricity than you use, the extra power goes back into the grid, and you get credits on your bill. It’s like turning your rooftop into a mini power plant that pays you back!
In Alberta, small micro-generators (systems under 150 kilowatts) get credited at the same rate they pay for electricity—meaning you’re fairly compensated for the energy you contribute.
If you’re at one of these stages, you qualify:
The size limit for micro-generation increased from 1 megawatt to 5 megawatts, making it easier for businesses and communities to generate more of their own power.
Micro-generation systems can now supply power to adjacent sites, giving even more flexibility in how Albertans use renewable energy.
With micro-generation, you’re not just saving money—you’re taking control of your power and helping build a cleaner, more sustainable Alberta. Ready to get started? We’ve got the expertise to help!
