Hi, I’m Larry – and yes, that’s me in the picture riding a Hereford bull named Jim. (I'm in the middle)
While most kids had a bike, I had a bull… and not just any bull. Jim was our multitasker, winter chore horse, summer parade star, and all-around MVP of the farm. In the dead of winter, he’d haul the sled out to the field so we could spread the “leftovers” from the barn. On the return trip, he’d make a pit stop at the bale stack so we could feed and bed the cattle. Talk about a one-bull operation.
By the early '70s, we were milking 80 dairy cows, had a solid beef herd led by a strapping 7/8 French Charolais bull, and we were working a couple thousand acres. I eventually left the farm but I never strayed far, trading in pitchforks to spending time in the mountains with one of my horses, some grub, and a bedroll.
Fast forward to today, and I'm now in the business of making life easier for farmers who grow our food. At Big Rock Power, we know the real cost of running a farm and I’m not just talking about feed and fuel.
