Carbon Offset Program

Maximize Your Solar Investment with Carbon Offset Credits

Do you have solar panels? Let’s make them work harder for you. At Big Rock Power, we believe your investment in solar energy should pay off; faster and better. That’s why we offer a premium price for any excess electricity you send back to the grid, giving you an accelerated return on investment.

What Are Carbon Offset Credits?

At Big Rock Power, we believe in rewarding clean energy and helping the environment. Carbon offset credits are tradable certificates representing the reduction or removal of greenhouse gases (GHGs) — typically one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) per credit. When you generate solar power that displaces emissions you would otherwise produce, you're helping reduce Alberta’s carbon footprint. With our Carbon Offset Credit Platform, you can be paid for those reductions, while contributing to national and global climate targets.

Our program is designed for small-scale solar PV system owners (“solar micro-generators”) in Alberta. Here’s how you participate:

Register Your System
Choose your preferred rate model — variable or fixed — and complete the enrollment form. We and our aggregator partners will determine your eligibility based on ownership of the solar system and that carbon credits were not previously sold or claimed via other financial incentives.

Generate & Monitor

Operate your solar system as normal. We use trusted monitoring technology (e.g. via third-party platforms) to verify its performance over the              verification period.

Verification & Credit Assignment
After the verification period, the system’s output and savings (or removals) are verified. Credits are then serialized and entered into the registry or market for trading.

Get Paid Annually
Once your credits are verified, you receive payment annually. If you chose the variable pricing path, your return reflects the current market price per credit (minus commission or associated costs). If fixed, the credit price is locked in for your term.

How It Works (for Solar Micro-Generators in Alberta)

Eligibility & Terms

  • Who qualifies: Owners of small solar PV systems in Alberta who have not already sold corresponding carbon credits under another incentive or program.

  • Ownership of credits: You must legally own the rights to the credits, and the credits must not have been previously sold.

  • Term & Pricing Models: You can choose between fixed-price or variable-price credit compensation. Variable pricing aligns with market trends; fixed pricing offers stability.

  • Commission & Costs: A commission may be deducted from the sale of credits; details will be transparent in your contract.

Why It Matters — Big Rock & Canada’s Carbon Offset Framework

Canada’s federal greenhouse gas offset system encourages projects that reduce GHG emissions or increase carbon removals. Proponents of eligible projects — such as improved forest management, landfill methane capture, and refrigeration system upgrades — can generate federal offset credits. These credits can be used for compliance under federal pricing systems or traded voluntarily. (Canada.ca)

Big Rock Power’s platform aligns with this broader framework by enabling Alberta solar micro-generators to participate meaningfully in climate action. While our program operates at a smaller scale, it supports the same overall goal: reducing emissions, increasing renewable energy adoption, and generating verifiable carbon offset credits.

Sample Estimations

  • A 10,000-kWh annual solar system might generate approximately 5 carbon credits per year (based on ~1 credit per 2,000 kWh).

  • System output depends on variables like panel size, number of sunshine hours, tilt, etc.

  • Payments will vary depending on the market price of carbon credits if you select variable pricing.

Getting Started / FAQs

  • How do I sign up? Use our online registration form. We’ll walk you through eligibility, contract terms, and verification protocols.

  • What verification is required? Solar system performance must be monitored; we partner with trusted technology platforms for accurate data.

  • How often do payments occur? Annually, after verification and serialization of credits.

  • Can I still benefit from the Solar Club program? Yes. Members of the Solar Club also gain access to exclusive export electricity rates and rebates in addition to carbon credit compensation.

  • Does this conflict with federal or provincial offset registries? No. Our program ensures you retain ownership of credits and prevent double-claiming; credits generated can be made available for voluntary carbon markets or compliance systems if valid under those protocols.
