As Trump continues to disrupt Canada’s economy with tariffs, Albertans find themselves with a choice. Will they continue to support foreign-owned companies or support local businesses?

When it comes to electricity and natural gas, one retailer in particular has roots in America. Don’t be fooled — they may have offices here, and they may employ Albertans, but profits end up on an American balance sheet. We aren’t allowed to say their name due to the fact that they have trademarked their name and have DIRECTED us not to use it.

Big Rock, on the other hand, is based in the foothills of Alberta. We’ve been here since 2011 (formerly under the name of NewGen Energy), and we have no plans to leave. I’m a former stubble jumper from Saskatchewan but, raised a family, and built a business here.

Since 2011, we’ve retailed electricity, natural gas, Internet, and solar rates to Albertans. Competing against incumbents like the “Big 4” has forced us to be competitive with our rates, develop innovative programs like our Solar Club™, and be the first utility retailer to include Internet as a bundled service with energy.

Our systems are housed here. The billing engine was built in Alberta and remains here. Big Rock Power invoices are produced here. We are as Canadian as any company could possibly be.

When Big Rock Power customers pay their bills, they’re reinvesting in a local business and not some far away, out-of-country megalith.

We are built on Canadian values. We are true North, strong and free.

I am a fifth-generation Canadian operating an Albertan business. I was born on a farm in Saskatchewan and moved to Alberta in 81 when the streets were still paved with gold and finding a job was as easy as picking up the phone. I’ve been through the good times and more than my share of less than good times as the Alberta economy has had more twists and turns than a roller coaster ride at the Calgary Stampede.

If this week revealed anything about President Trump, it’s that his “house” is in disarray. Albertans know what’s up, and it’s not just our elbows, we know that supporting local businesses is the way forward.

It’s time to take a stand. Be like the ROCK; let’s stand firm and on guard for Canadian businesses. Not only will this support our country from the rantings and ravings of the orange-crusted, bloviated blowhard south of the border, pretty good chance you will save some money while you are at it.

Big Rock Power – We are the right team for Alberta energy.
